ABOUT

Fragile new author album called Hotel v tiché ulici (Hotel in a quiet street) was recorded by the duo Lada Šimíčková (lyrics and vocals) and Ivo Cicvárek. They have been performing their songs on the stage for a long time now, but always only as a duo. At concerts, Lada’s voice is accompanied not only by piano or guitar, but also by accordion and electronic instruments – this basic concept is supported by a guest band on the album. And not just any band! These delicate songs were completed by  Vilém Spilka (guitar), Petr Pospíšil (bass), Honza Vašina  (saxophone), Martin Kleibl (drums) and Luboš Malina  (banjo, Irish flute), resulting in acoustic-electronic songs with a great number of instrumental performances that support the overall tone of the album.

Author-wise, the album is standing on the lyrics by the poet and songwriter Lada Šimíčková; Ivo Cicvárek has been dressing it in an original musical suit for five years. In addition to Ivo Cicvárek, Slávek Janoušek did musical setting to three songs and bluesman Pepa Streichl dedicated an interesting chanson to Lada.

The most fundamental point of the entire album remains the material itself, in which Lada Šimíčková as a songwriter presents herself in top form – she alternates poetic and lyrical songs full of dreamy images with multivocal human stories. The listener can find in those lyrics an odd character called Angela who spits on the heads of pedestrians in Barcelona, stories inspired by Lada’s family roots or a woman who compares her relationship to sailing on a sinking ship. Some motives or in one case even some characters return in the lyrics, just as our life goes in circles. Although Lada Šimíčková doesn’t consider herself a singer, she can give her verses a unique, emotional, but also civil and very simple form. All this makes this recording more than an interesting event in the modern Czech folk scene. It is perfect especially for lovers of a fine coherent sound, where every note of the accompanying group, every phrase and emotion in their voice has its place.
