Identity crisis in the world and one Migrant Song

The Odd Gifts, the project of the founding member of Eggnoise Ondřej Galuška, present the title track Migrant Song from the upcoming album to be released at the end of August. Ondřej Galuška also invited some special guests to the recording studio. The atmosphere of the song is greatly enhanced by guest percussionist Moustapha Faye from Senegal and the vocal parts are also shared by James Harries and Alasdair Bouch, two Englishmen living in Prague.

I wanted to infuse this project with the energy of people who have a similar experience as I of staying in a foreign culture for a longer period of time, which may entail a certain identity crisis,” comments the author of the song on the choice of guests. And he goes on to explain why the lyrics of Migrant Song are posed as question. “I wanted to explore the problematic character of the whole situation and at the same time remain as forthcoming and open-minded as possible. Throughout the album I try to reflect the complex play of unfulfilled and oftentimes false expectations of those who arrive and always necessarily simplifying prejudices of the locals. What I think is really important is that whoever leaves their home becomes a question not only for their new surroundings but also for themselves. We become a question, a hunger, and a stranger the minute we leave home. And we do not know what exactly the change of surroundings will do to us. And I am sincerely convinced that whoever it is that is coming here or elsewhere they are mostly coming as a question mark, not as an exclamation mark.” The video to the single was shot by Pavel Mezihorák during the recording at the Jamor recording studio.

The upcoming album to be released on 30th August will be called Migrant Songs. Ondřej Galuška conceived the album not only as a reflection of contemporary world which has been set in motion (“songs of migrants”) but also as an exploration of the movement of songs and sounds among authors, musicians, interpretations etc. (“migrating songs”). This second meaning of the title explains the wide array of guests on the album. Besides the musicians appearing in the title song guest appearances are made by Justin Lavash, Bijou Camara, Samantha Twigg Johnson, Ondřej Slavík from Zrní or Marie Puttnerová from Jablkoň. The album Migrant Songs will be released at the end of August by the Indies Scope record label.

The Odd Gifts are the solo project of Ondřej Galuška from the Czech band Eggnoise. The project already released one record in 2012 under the title of O.G. and the Odd Gifts. For the recording of the current album Galuška invited former Eggnoise members Michael Nosek, Jaryn Janek and Jan Mizler.

Lyrics:

Migrant Song

As a question, what do you need
and what do you look for in an answer
As a question, what do you need
to put your mind at rest

And to sleep sound
for the rest of the night
Sleep sound
for the rest of the night

As a hunger, what do you need
and what would you like to fill your bowl
As a hunger, what do you need
when the day’s hand is a miser

And to sleep sound
for the rest of the night
Sleep sound
for the rest of the night

We’ll come round again
in the morning light
Raise our eyes again
to the morning light
But may we sleep tonight
for the rest of the night

As a stranger, who do you need
and who’d you trust to give you directions
As a stranger, who do you need
to snuggle up close, hand in hand,
heart in heart and lie down

To sleep sound
for the rest of the night
Sleep sound
for the rest of the night
