Guitar, cigarette and a strange morning when thinking whether the upcoming day will be as useless as the previous one. Freak folk of Gregory Dimanche transformed in a one-man project called Psychedelic Morning and the new folk album Cigareta ve dvou. Thirteen songs of a Czech man with Argentinean ancestry and French grandmother who loved Edith Piaf... yeah, and his grandfather loved Miles Davis.
It is a debut album in which the significant role is played by Ingrid, as Gregory calls his “Spanish guitar”. As the album title suggests, Cigareta ve dvou/Cigarette for two, girls and relationships are one of the main themes of these songs. Also the single had a girl’s name – Julie, the second song on the album, followed by the song called Laura. Gregory adds that the album is not only about girls though. “I would say that it’s half and half. I usually figure out later what the song is actually about :) When I create a song, I spit something out, something that needs to get out of me and like a half year later I get this aha moment :) Now I know what is it about :) I call it one side of an emotional triangle, when you have to get something out of you because it’s not good to keep them inside of you.”
The album isn’t bogged down with complicated arrangements and melodies. “Psychedelic Morning are ordinary songs which are created spontaneously and casually during a very short period of time and are very spontaneous.“, says Gregory about how the songs are made. Although he adds: “So at the moment the songs are created, I don’t care about the issues of influence. Somebody hears Mňága, somebody else the classic Dylan. I love Joy Division and the voice of Ian Curtis, as well as of David Bowie and The Cure. So there it all is mixed together and melted in the Psychedelic Morning.“ Gregory builds his songs on a “feeling” associated with an original way of singing. His voice can be heard in the rock band Prasklá struna, this time Gregory presents his quieter side on a solo album.
This is all documented in a hilarious cover by Lenka Šimečková that captures the mood of the entire album. Gregory tries to describe this atmosphere. “I think that the entire album has an atmosphere of tranquility, when you have a drink and a cigarette after a long day at work and all the hustle and your head is full of thoughts about personal problems, joys, relationships, about what you had experienced and what you want to experience or what is experiencing your favorite book character...“
Cigareta ve dvou is a debut album of a songwriter who doesn’t try to impress you with wisdom or, to the contrary, deafen you with incomprehensible rhymes. These are ordinary songs of everyday and extraordinary life about emotions which are often inside of each of us, we just might not know about it...
