Yellow Sisters

Yellow Sisters is a female vocal group whose work spans across genres such as soul, funk, world music, jazz, and reggae. Yellow Sisters experiment with melody and rhythm, exploring new ways of expression and vocal performance. Their music is entirely original. Since 2015, they have been performing with their regular guest, beatboxer Honza Melichar.

In 2025, they are celebrating their 20th anniversary with a multimedia production that includes a special performance featuring numerous guests, as well as an exhibition of paintings, photographs, and costumes by leading Czech artists. The celebration began in April with a concert at the Vocal – Night of Female Singers festival at Prague’s Jazz Dock. It continues with the 20 Years Tour, culminating in two concerts on November 6 and 7 at the New Town Hall in Prague.

The group was founded in 2005. A year later, they won the “Colours Talents” competition, which led to the release of their debut album Singalana under the Indies Scope label. Over the years, Yellow Sisters have released seven albums, performed in 16 countries around the world, toured Spain, and performed for two Czech presidents.

They first introduced themselves to a wider audience during a live TV broadcast of the TýTý awards in 2006. Shortly after, English actor Michael Palin of Monty Python chose them to appear in the BBC travel documentary New Europe (2007).

In the following years, they opened for the world-famous Blind Boys of Alabama, gave a private performance for Bobby McFerrin at the Prague Congress Centre, featured on a remix compilation of the Japanese film Nautica, performed at the Czech Ball in Brussels during the Czech Republic's EU presidency, and were invited to London, where the BBC produced a one-hour radio feature about them.

Their second album Tubab Woman (2010) reached 7th place on the world music album chart Spin The Globe's Top Ten, alongside artists like Salif Keita and Gotan Project.

In 2015, they performed at the prestigious a cappella festival in London, as well as in Rorschach, Switzerland, and at the European Cultural Festival in Algiers, representing the Czech Republic. That same year, they received the “Golden Diploma” at the international vocal group competition in Graz, Austria.

Also in 2015, beatboxer Honza Melichar joined the all-female lineup. For younger audiences, they created the show Zvěřinec dětem (Animal Show for Children). Together, they released a successful trilogy of children’s albums: Zvěřinec (2012, 2017, 2022), followed by a Ukulele Songbook in 2023.

In 2025, the group marks its 20th anniversary with a multimedia production including a performance with special guests, an art exhibition, and a music documentary chronicling the Yellow Sisters’ two-decade-long career. The festivities began with an April 11 concert at the Night of Female Singers event at Jazz Dock in Prague and will culminate in two concerts on November 6 and 7 at the New Town Hall in Prague.

A new addition to the Yellow Sisters lineup is singer and guitarist Michal Strnad from the vocal group Skety, who joined the group after Antonia Nyass left in 2023.
