Interview with Jaromír 99 & The Bombers

fotkaInterview with Jaromír Švejdík and Jaroslav Rudiš:

1. What is the origin of The Bombers?
The Bombers were born during exhibitions and private openings of the cartoon about Alois Nebel. We felt an urge to enliven these events somehow. At first, we only played some songs by Umakart, but then Jaromír started to compose new songs when he was relaxing from drawing the Bomber. We are a cartoon band. The form is not as important as the content, sharp cuts, play with the hyperbole. Some of us want finally to enjoy a bit of rocker’s life.

2. Are The Bombers a bunch of friends or is Jaromír 99 the leader, dominating over all of the band?
Jaromír is a leader, although it may not be apparent at some concerts, as our guitar player Joe has a natural tendency to take over initiative. The manager in him cannot be suppressed. We are great friends who enjoy being together and we want to live it up.

3. The name of Jaromír Švejdík is usually associated with Priessnitz and Umakart bands. In what ways do The Bombers differ?
The difference is that it is not a band of musicians. We pay much more attention to image than it is usual with Czech bands. Sometimes the rhythm bumbles about or the chords don’t meet. We play out of joy. We are inspired by Scandinavian family music making. Music is a kind of relaxation for us.

4. Are the songs in the album only inspired by the „Bomber“ cartoon or are there any other sources of inspiration?
The Bombers album originated as a soundtrack to the Bomber cartoon, which is being published by our home publishing house Labyrint. Everything serves as an inspiration – pubs, groups from myspace.com, folklore songs, brass music, folk, country, hip hop, soap operas, movies, books but most of all probably cartoons. We are not limited as far as inspiration is concerned. We may be in performing music, but we try to overcome it by enthusiasm and drive.

5. The sound of The Bombers is completely different if compared with Priessnitz and Umakart. Are also the songs different?
The Bombers are a contrary to Umakart, which was urban and cold with finely polished sound. The Bombers are rough and unrestrained. The sound is bad and dirty. Priessnitz is a normal concert band, daily bread and almost a family. The Bombers and Umakart are projects limited in time.

6. Jaroslav Rudiš is known particularly as an author and screenwriter. Was he active in another music band before he joined The Bombers?
In reading sessions, Jára Rudiš sometimes performs with the band emblazoned with legends – the U-Bahn, which plays literary punk. He learnt to play the keyboard a little with The Bombers. But just a little.

7. What will be the concert version of the album like? And how often do you plan to perform?
We have performed in Munich and in Stockholm and it was accepted surprisingly well. However, we understood that we had to be harder. Thus it is possible that during live performances we will add the bass and percussions. And if not, we will at least have the vozembouch (medieval Bohemian instrument). We are preparing our small café tour for the end of November, but we would like to perform mainly abroad. It seems people understand us better there.
